Snowball owns and operates a modern data centre. By building a data centre from the ground up we were able to implement the ideal hosted environment. The data centre allows Snowball to offer our clients reliability, security and high performance 24/7. The entire data centre ecosystem is monitored pro-actively 24 hours a day.
The data centre was designed and built by the top specialist of data centres in Southern Africa namely Infrastructure Solutions.
Snowball's hosted systems have been designed to accommodate clients who demand the most reliable network and Internet performance. There is a central focus on redundancy allowing the network to rapidly self-heal without interruptions. UPS and air conditioning units are replicated so that should either of these critical items fail, there will always be backup. Every cabinet has two independent power feeds.
UPS and electrical work was done by UPS Technologies. All other critical electrical work was performed by Venter Wessels.
Snowball's office and data centre is located in Capital Place which is a secure office park in Technopark. The first level of security is through a 24/7 manned security gate. Access to the the building itself is through security tags assigned to each staff member. The periphery of building is protected by CCTV cameras.
Two master keys are kept, one with the manager on duty and one with call centre manager.
The existing SMS notification system has been running for 12 years and monitors all key components of the data centre and the devices therein. Two teams are responsible for reacting to SMS's, the data centre management team of which the CEO is a part and the infrastructure team. The UPS is monitored by SMS as well, the UPS contractor and ourselves receive notification when there is a power failure. Key components of the UPS system can be retrieved using SMS.
Snowball's data centre has a 2 hour fire-rated door and walls. The walls stretch from the concrete floor to the concrete roof.

Snowball's data centre has redundant fibre optic, copper and wireless connections to multiple upstream 1st tier Internet service providers.
The current building is fed via the local transformer to the municipal switch and then into the building into the main distribution board where it is split out to the AMF panel, Generator and UPS.
The UPS SYSTEMS are configured as a parallel power source into the server room. We have a UPS-A and UPS-B which provides a dual power source.
It introduces a high level of redundancy in the power platform to increase the MTBF and eliminate the shortfall of single point of failure.
Power for the UPS is sourced from a dedicated (LV-DB) which obtains its source directly for the generator DB
The UPS's have integrated static transfer switches (STS) that are able to transfer the load to bypass seamlessly (no break whatsoever) should it be required.
We also have a GSM Power Monitor connected to each ups that monitors all critical function 24/7 informing the client and our power technicians.
The electrical distribution is designed to provide duel feeds A and B to all the RACK SYSTEMS.
This allows the load balancing to be precisely controlled and at the same time adds a level of redundancy to the electrical cabling infrastructure.
Each cabinet has dual supply that obtains its power from UPS-A and UPS-B.
The electrical distribution board supplying the UPS includes surge protection which enhances the protection factor.
The entire site has a prime generator set (3 phase) with a dedicated feed to server rooms LV distribution panel.
The generator has diesel capacity of 600 liters which allows 18-22 hrs of continuous run time.
It has an automated control panel (Deep Sea) with an advanced PLC setup to detect power errors and failures.
The data centre is currently cooled by redundant 44000 BTU under ceiling split units which will be increased by an additional 44000 BTU units that will allow between 1,2/1,3Kilo Watt per m2. The cooling system is also fitted to the UPS system - that means when the power goes off the environment inside the data centre stays at a constant temperature
